Curious about the funny name of this hair accessory? This hair accessory is named after Scunchie a pet toy poodle! Yes! When it was sold to Scunci International, the name was altered to Scünci, but later updated to include an “r”.
So who was Scunchie? in 1986, nightclub singer and pianist Rommy Revson created the first known prototype of the scrunchie for her personal use. The design was inspired by the waistband of her pajama pants, and named after her poodle toy. By 1987 it was officially patented. (the prototype along with the sewing machine used to make it, are today in display in the Smithsonian Museum.)
But the real first scrunchie was actually invented in 1963 by a man named Philips E. Meyers
